Weird Facts

Aspen easily regenerates vegetatively by shoots and suckers from its long lateral roots. Root sprouting results in genetically identical trees, called a "clone". All the trees in a clone have identical genetics, characteristics and share a root structure.

With very little breeze, aspen leaves tremble almost constantly, and audibly.

Aspen is often the first tree to colonize a fire burned forest. The fire can kill the aspen tree, but not the root system, which quickly sprouts. Up to 100,000 suckers can sprout and grow on a single acre after a fire.
