Weird Facts

Although we think of winter frosts as harmless to woody trees, that is not always the case. Very warm weather during dormancy, followed by a large and rapid drop in temperature, can lead to freezing damage to shoots and buds.

A late spring frost occurring after buds have started to be active can also damage or kill young tender shoots.

There is also evidence that climate warming may increase the risk of spring frost damage, by inducing earlier bud and foliage development, which increases the risk of late spring frost damage.
